Belfast — With over 20 years of corporate information technology experience, Chris Carroll decided to take the plunge this summer and begin his own company servicing the IT needs of small to mid-sized companies.
Riverstone IT, located at 81 Belmont Ave., where the former Full Circle Holistic Vet Clinic was, has been undergoing some remodeling lately, Carroll said, in preparation for developing additional offices at the site and growing a team.
After several years of doing IT consulting on the side and working full-time as well, Carroll said in mid-summer, he decided to open his business full-time.
Carroll, who works with his wife, Lisa, said they have been busy on the computer/network side with clients’ employees transitioning to work from anywhere because of the pandemic. Lisa supports the office with administrative tasks, Carroll said, as well as providing a much-needed helping had with on-site installations for networking, phone or camera installs.
Recently, Carroll has also branched into offering VoIP phone services, delivering voice communications over the internet. “As long as you have an internet connection, a VoIP phone will work from anywhere,” he said.
Carroll says the IT industry has changed over the years from a product-based business where he sold hardware and software to a service-based model where he performs more of a consultant role.
In prior years, he would set up and configure a client’s products, then head out the door. With today’s service model, he said, “you put in solutions that are ongoing,” including maintenance and installing updates.
Many IT companies offer one size fits all packages, he said, which price out a lot of medium-sized businesses. “In IT there is no one size fits all,” Carroll said.
“I’ve come up with a platform that covers the essentials a business would need, which therefore lowers the barrier of entry,” he said. Working closely with his clients, he can look at what additional products and services they might need to iron out any other issues and to meet their business goals.
While Carroll said he works with just about anybody, as long as it is the right fit for everybody, his target client size is anywhere from 10 to 150 employees.
His jobs, he said, have included anything from covering the whole aspect of phones through the networks, making sure the networks are stable and running efficiently, to keeping security up to date and with best practices, backup systems and running the helpdesk for users.
“Whenever they have an issue they call,” he said.
Carroll said Riverstone even installs digital surveillance cameras and provides backup services. According to the company’s website, clients have the ability to log into the system and access live footage remotely on their mobile device.
